ISDE Strengthens International Collaboration and Showcases Indonesia’s Contributions at BIDDF 2026 in China
Beijing, China – The Indonesian Society for Digestive Endoscopy (PB PEGI) once again demonstrated its active engagement on the international stage through its participation in the Beijing International Digestive Disease Forum (BIDDF) 2026, held from 12–14 June 2026 in Beijing, China. Representing PB PEGI at this prestigious scientific forum was Dr. Hery Djagat Purnomo, who played multiple strategic roles throughout the meeting.

PB PEGI’s presence at BIDDF 2026 received special recognition from the organizers. During the opening ceremony, BIDDF 2026 Chairman Prof. Li Peng and Prof. Zhang Shutian expressed their appreciation for Indonesia’s active contribution to scientific activities and international collaborations in the field of gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy.
On this occasion, Prof. Li Peng also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between China and Indonesia through future strategic partnerships in education, training, research, and the development of advanced endoscopic technologies.
PB PEGI’s participation extended far beyond attendance as a delegate. Throughout BIDDF 2026, the organization was entrusted with ten official assignments, comprising four speaking engagements, four moderator roles in scientific sessions, one role as an initiator of the Asia-Pacific Emerging Digestive Endoscopy Digital Intelligence Initiative, and one role as an operator during a live demonstration session.

On 13 June 2026, Dr. Hery Djagat Purnomo commenced his scientific activities by delivering a presentation entitled “Endobariatric in Indonesia” during the Frontiers Forum on Endoscopic Weight Loss. He also delivered several other presentations, including “Building Successful Weight-Loss Programs in Indonesia: Challenges, Outcomes, and Future Directions,” “Endoscopic Management of Bile Duct Injury: Real-World Outcomes from a Tertiary Referral Center,” and “Building Advanced Digestive Endoscopy Services in Developing Countries: Lessons from Indonesia.”
Through these presentations, Indonesia shared its experiences in developing advanced endoscopic services, managing complex clinical cases, and establishing sustainable digestive endoscopy centers in developing countries. The presentations highlighted the growing expertise and capacity of Indonesian endoscopy services, which continue to gain recognition at both regional and international levels.

In addition to his role as a speaker, Dr. Hery was invited to chair and moderate several scientific sessions covering the latest developments in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy. These responsibilities further reflected Indonesia’s increasingly prominent position within the Asia-Pacific scientific community.
One of the key highlights of BIDDF 2026 was the launch of the Asia-Pacific Emerging Digestive Endoscopy Digital Intelligence Initiative. PB PEGI was among the organizations involved as an initiator of this collaborative effort, which aims to promote the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in digestive endoscopy across the Asia-Pacific region.

Furthermore, Dr. Hery was selected as an operator in a live demonstration session, one of the forum’s flagship programs, providing participants with the opportunity to observe advanced endoscopic techniques and technologies in real-time.

Following the BIDDF 2026 meeting in Beijing, the PB PEGI delegation continued its scientific program in Hangzhou, focusing on the advancement of endobariatric therapy. On 16 June 2026, Dr. Hery participated in a hands-on workshop on the placement of the Gastric Balloon and Stent System (GBSS) using animal models at the Animal Laboratory of China Medical University. The workshop provided valuable practical experience in the application of emerging endobariatric technologies through simulation-based training and hands-on practice.

On 17 June 2026, Dr. Hery visited Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou to observe clinical GBSS procedures in patients with obesity. The visit offered an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the clinical implementation of endobariatric therapy and to learn from the healthcare delivery systems employed at one of China’s leading referral centers.
PB PEGI’s active participation in BIDDF 2026, together with the subsequent training and observational programs in Hangzhou, is expected to contribute significantly to the organization’s development and the enhancement of its members’ competencies. Beyond expanding international networks and creating opportunities for research collaboration, these activities represent an important step toward advancing digestive endoscopy services in Indonesia.
Through its continued involvement in international scientific forums, PB PEGI reaffirms its commitment to contributing to the global advancement of gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy while bringing innovative knowledge, experience, and collaborative opportunities back to Indonesia for the benefit of patient care and healthcare development.
