Mastery Learning Improves IUS Skills as a Complement to Endoscopy in IBD Management
Jakarta — A recent study led by Rabbinu Rangga Pribadi and colleagues demonstrates that a mastery learning approach effectively enhances physicians’ skills in performing intestinal ultrasound (IUS), particularly in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Published in Acta Medica Indonesiana, the study involved 37 internists and gastroenterologists who participated in a two-day IUS workshop. The training program combined pre-learning, hands-on sessions, and real-time feedback from instructors, with participants assessed through standardized pre- and post-tests.
Among the 34 participants who completed the training, results showed significant improvement in technical skills. Approximately 67.6% achieved competency standards in sigmoid colon assessment, while 50% reached the required standard for terminal ileum evaluation. However, some participants still required additional training to reach optimal competency levels.
These findings highlight the role of IUS as a complementary tool to endoscopy, particularly in the longitudinal monitoring of IBD patients. As a non-invasive and patient-friendly modality, IUS allows for repeated assessments and may help reduce the need for more invasive endoscopic procedures.
As a professional organization, PEGI continues to promote capacity building through evidence-based approaches and the adoption of relevant innovations. The integration of endoscopy with non-invasive modalities such as IUS represents an important step toward more comprehensive and patient-centered gastroenterology care.
