4th BEST Indonesia Camp in Padang: Strengthening Competence and Promoting Standardization in Endoscopy Across Indonesia

Padang, West Sumatera – The Indonesian Society for Digestive Endoscopy (ISDE), in collaboration with the Academy of Endoscopy (AOE), successfully organized the Mastery Learning in Endoscopy Course: 4th Basic Endoscopy Skills Training (BEST) Indonesia Camp on October 8 – 10, 2026 at Pangeran Beach Hotel Padang, West Sumatera.

The program brought together 26 participants from 12 endoscopy training centers across Indonesia as part of ongoing effort to enhance medical professionals’ competencies and promote the standardidzation of endoscopic procedures throughout the country

The program began with pre-workshop sessions held from September 22 to October 5, 2026. During this preparatory phase, participants practiced using bowl simulators at their respective training centers, submitted procedure videos for evaluation, and received direct feedback from faculty members. This process allowed participants to refine their fundamental skills and identify areas for improvement before proceeding to the onsite training.

Following the preparatory phase, participants continued their learning through hands-on training, expert guidance, and skills evaluation in Padang. This structured approach emphasized the importance of repeated practice, constructive feedback, and progressive skills development to support mastery of basic endoscopic procedures.

Promoting Standardization of Endoscopic Procedures Across Indonesia

One of the primary objectives of the BEST Indonesia Camp is to promote the standardization of endoscopic procedures across Indonesia. Through structured and continuous training, the program aims to support greater consistency in technical skills and the application of endoscopic procedures in accordance with established standards.

The participation of representatives from 12 endoscopy training centers is an important step toward expanding opportunities for endoscopy skills development. Through structured learning and evaluation, participants are expected to further develop the competencies needed to apply standardized procedures in their respective clinical settings.

Standardization is an essential component of efforts to deliver endoscopic services that are safe, comfortable, and of high quality for patients. Consistent procedural practices, supported by competent medical professionals, are expected to help maintain the quality of endoscopic procedures and strengthen the implementation of patient safety principles.

Through the collaboration between ISDE and UOA, the BEST Indonesia camp foucuses not only on individual technical proficiency but also on the broader goal of improving the quality and consistency of gastrointestinal endoscopy services across Indonesia.

Building Competence Through the Mastery Learning Approach

The Mastery Learning approach places competency mastery at the center of the learning process. Rather than relying solely on theoretical instruction, participants engage in guided practice, performance evaluation, and continuous skills improvement.

The combination of pre-workshop sessions and onsite training enables participants to prepare before undertaking intensive practical sessions with faculty members. It also provides opportunities to receive feedback, refine their techniques, and progressively develop their skills according to their learning needs.

Beyond technical training, the BEST Indonesia Camp serves as a platform for learning and collaboration, helping participants build confidence and strengthen their professional competencies. The knowledge and experience gained through the program are expected to be applied in daily clinical practice and contribute to their ongoing commitment to improving patient care.

A Continued Commitment to Patient Safety

Developing endoscopic competence requires dedication, consistent practice, structured evaluation, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Through the BEST Indonesia Camp, PEGI and AOE continue to support the development of competent medical professionals and encourage the implementation of endoscopic procedures in accordance with established standards.

The executive board fo PB PEGI extends its sincere appreciation to all faculty members, observer trainess. participants, and sponsors whose support and contributions helped make the 4th BEST Indonesia Camp a success.

The conclusion of this program marks not the end of learning, but another step in the ongoing journey to improve the quality of gastrointestinal endoscopy in Indonesia. By strengthening professional competencies and promoting procedural standardization across regions, PEGI and AOE hope to support more consistent access to safe, comfortable, and high-quality endoscopic services for patients throughout the country.
