Assessing Health Conditions from the Farts Duration and Smell
Fart, or in scientific language commonly called flatus, is one of the normal parts of digestion which shows bacterial activity in the intestine. Fart can also be a marker of health conditions. For example in patients after surgery, farting could show that the body’s system has returned to normal.
Gastrointestinal consultant of Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital (RSCM), Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam, MD, PhD, MMB, FACP, mentioned that the fart’s duration and smell can indicate the health condition. Fart commonly occurs 14 times in healthy people. Unusual fart duration can indicate a changes in diet. Foods intake which lack of fiber, vitamins, and minerals could causing the inability of fart, and a bloated feeling in stomach. Eating foods that are lack of nutrients can also causing too much fart, due to the inability of the digestive system to process the food.
Related to the smell of fart, Dr. Ari cites that the more foul the smell of fart, the greater the chances to get a digestive problem. Fart which is composed of 59% Nitrogen, 21% Hydrogen, 9% Carbon dioxide, 7% Methane, and 4% Oxygen shoul not having any smell. The smell of fart comes from bacteria that produce methane or hydrogen sulfide, and foods that are high in fiber or contain sulfur.
In order for the digestive system to stay healthy and normall, it is necessary to always control your food intake, PEGI fellas!
