Tips to Prevent Heat Stroke Due to Hot Weather

Throughout the end of October, daytime temperatures in a number of regions in Indonesia were hotter than usual. Even BMKG recorded Indonesia’s maximum daily temperature reaching 39°C. Especially in the Java and Bali islands, extreme drought and the potential for forest fires are recorded. This condition is expected to continue to occur for some time to come. This very hot weather has the potential to cause health problems such as dehydration to heat stroke.

Heat stroke itself is the body’s failure to cool down either by sweating or evaporation from the skin due to ambient heat. Internal Medicine Specialist, Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam, MD, PhD, MMB, FACP, FACG, FINASIM said that heat stroke will cause body temperature to rise above 40 degrees Celsius accompanied by a decrease in consciousness. The initial symptoms of heat stroke include an increase in body temperature, redness of the skin, muscle cramps, headaches, intense thirst, fatigue, lack of excitement, excessive sweating, and urination that turns cloudy and yellow. This initial symptom must be recognized by the community in anticipating the current hot weather in big cities in Indonesia. Those who are at risk of having a heat stroke include elderly people and those who have chronic diseases including diabetes, heart and lung disorders.

In addition to extreme environmental temperatures, a specialist in internal medicine at Pondok Indah Hospital Dr. Muhammad Ikhsan Mokoagow MMedSci, SpPD, FINASIM said that heat stroke can also be triggered by heavy physical activity. This is because when experiencing severe physical fatigue, the body will sweat profusely in an effort to remove heat from the body. The danger can be damage to body muscles, convulsions, impaired kidney function, and can even result in death.

But don’t worry PEGI fellas, Prof. Ari said that heat stroke can be avoided by increasing water consumption in hot weather. Drink plenty of water (3 to 4 liters) so we’ll not become too much dehydrated, which will worsen health due to extreme hot temperature. Avoid beverages that contain caffeine such as coffee because it will actually aggravate dehydration. If our urination becomes more turbid and colored dark yellow, this is a sign that we must increase and consume water. And if the body starts giving other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea after the move in a hot place, you should immediately see a doctor for treatment. For food, it is recommended to consume food with high water content to maintain the quantity of water in the body. In addition to drinks and food, long-term exposure to high ambient temperatures also needs to be avoided.

dr. Ikhsan added, the use of protectors such as hat, umbrella, and sunscreen when doing outdoors activities, avoiding excessive physical activity during high environmental heat, and increasing drinking water including those containing electrolytes especially when the body sweats a lot also needs to be considered as an effort to prevent heat stroke .

PEGI fellas is now ready to face the hot weather, right?

Healthy greeting.
