Patients with Digestive Disorders who Should Not be Vaccinated with COVID-19

The COVID-19 vaccine produced by Sinovac is starting to circulate in Indonesia. However, there are several categories that cannot get it, one of which is people with gastrointestinal disorders or certain gastrointestinal disorders. As stated by the gastroentero-hepatology consultant as well as the chairman of PB PEGI, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, MMB, SpPD, K-GEH, FACP, FACG, FINASIM in an interview, Covid-19 vaccination cannot be done in patients who suffer from chronic or uncontrolled gastrointestinal disease. One such disease is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which is also caused by autoimmune disorders, in which IBD is in an acute condition and is in therapy where vaccines are not allowed. Meanwhile, other gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers are allowed to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, as long as they do not have a history of allergies with previous vaccines.

Normally, as stated in the recommendations of the Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialist Association (PAPDI), the Sinovac vaccine is given to healthy adults aged 18-59 years. Usually the participant will receive an explanation after he or she agrees to follow the vaccination rules and schedule. Participants should also be aware that injections take place two times two weeks apart.

Prof. Ari also explained that this vaccination is an effort to form antibodies in the body to prevent infection with the SARS-Cov2 virus. Therefore, people who are in good health and are not suffering from chronic diseases are advised to receive vaccines, while maintaining health protocols.

Healthy greetings.
