IBD and Its Risks to Colon Cancer
19 May is celebrated as World Day for inflammatory bowel disease.
What is IBD?
Is it true that IBD increases the risk of colon cancer?
A study says, IBD patients have a 5x higher risk of colorectal cancer than ordinary people. In other words, IBD is a risk factor for colorectal cancer. gastroentero-hepatology consultant and chairman of PB PEGI, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, MMB, SpPD, K-GEH, FACP, FACG, FINASIM explained, “Ulcerative colitis can become malignant (cancer) if not treated properly. But the journey is long, it could be decades. ”
To date, no genetic basis has been identified to explain the cancer predisposition to IBD. Allegedly, it is chronic inflammation / bleeding that causes cancer because the inflamed area can promote the development of abnormal cells, which in turn increase cancer cells. The increased risk of colorectal cancer in IBD patients does not mean that all IBD patients will develop colorectal cancer.
Then how do you prevent and reduce the risk of colon cancer?
The data show that anti-inflammatory drugs can prevent the development of colorectal cancer.
In addition, the most important step is screening with colonoscopy as a prevention. If it is found the development of abnormal cells or cancer cells, action can be taken immediately so that the development of cancer can be prevented. Discuss with your doctor whether you need to do a colonoscopy every 1-2 years.
The literature states, patients with remitting IBD have the same risk as active IBD patients against colorectal cancer. This may be due to the inflammation that occurs in IBD although, of course, inflammation is much higher in active IBD. The patient needs to take anti-inflammatory drugs. The 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) drug mesalazine is touted as a superior anti-inflammatory, which can prevent the development of colorectal cancer in IBD patients.
Support by improving diet. Reduce consumption of foods that can trigger inflammation in the digestive tract and make IBD recur: fat, red meat, sugar, alcohol, and avoid smoking as much as possible. And don’t forget to exercise regularly, PEGI fellas.
Healthy greeting.
