HOW TO OVERCOME RELAPSE OF STOMACH ACID DURING RAMADAN FASTING

When the stomach is empty, stomach acid which relapse can make the sufferer feel uncomfortable. Syifa Mustika, MD, a consultant of gastroenterohepatology, shared three ways to deal with stomach acid that relapse during fasting.

1. Drink lots of water and consume fruits
Increasing water consumption at suhoor and breaking the fast will keep the body hydrated during fasting. At least drink two liters of water or eight glasses at night. Liquids can also be obtained from high-mineral fruits such as watermelons, coconuts, melons, papayas, and apples.

2. Keep taking medicine
If there are digestive disorders such as stomach acid or GERD, it is recommended to continue consuming the medicine at suhoor to maintain health and stamina while fasting.

3. Consumption of high carbohydrates
Foods high in carbohydrates are recommended to be consumed at suhoor because they can make you full longer. In addition, complex carbohydrates will take longer to digest in the digestive system. Therefore, high-carb foods can be a solution to overcome stomach acid rising during fasting. Besides rice, sources of carbohydrates can come from fruits such as dates fruit and bananas.
